Big Pieces Fell Into Place Tonight
My youngest asked me the other day what was going on with the ride. (The Ride? Should it be a proper noun?) Gave her an update. Mentioned that by my Rules I’d invalidated my ride in Hawaii of years ago. That I hadn’t yet figured out how I was going to get me and the bike to Los Angeles. That I hadn’t yet figured out what I was going to do with the bike while I was in Honolulu.
“Hawaii? Ooooo, I want to go!” she said.
Which started a chain-of-events discussion about it.
Readers’ Digest Version: She and her sig other and I will drive my car out to the Left Coast. (As she and I are both big Breaking Bad fans, we can make a pit-stop in Albuquerque to see all the fan sites. That’ll save me having to do it via bicycle coming back.) They’re going to pick up tix to Hawaii separately and stay there longer than I’m going to be there.
Her boss lives in LA. We’ll leave the car and bike with him while we’re all in Hawaii. I’ll fly back on my schedule, pick up the bike, and head on my way. They’ll follow on their schedule, pick up the car and drive back.
It’s adding another 5000+ miles to the odometer (fresh to the 5000+ I added from the trip to Washington) . . . but, hell, that’s what cars are for, isn’t it? To drive. It’s a Honda, for crying out loud. They run forever.
We’ll split the cost of gas / lodging / all that stuff just getting there. That’ll be less than the cost of any of us flying or taking the train. The bike will come out with us. I won’t have to ship it separately. I’ve got a place to store the bike while I’m Hawaii.
I think this will work.
